A paramedic is the first health care professional who reaches the patient in the case of a medical emergency situation. Paramedics provide aid like advanced life support care to patients, artificial respiration or administering oxygen in case of suffocation, dispensing antiseptic solution for preventing infection, administering intravenous fluids and performing various emergency medical procedures. They assess the intricacies of injuries of patients and determine medical procedures to follow. Since they provide life saving service to people, the salary earned by them is substantial. Paramedic Education Requirements:
If you are aspiring to become a paramedic, you need to have at least a high school diploma. Apart from that you need to have an ENT which is a two year course offered by several colleges and training institutes. In this program you learn about advanced pharmacology and anatomy etc. Upon completion of the program, you get registered as a certified paramedic you have to complete a certification exam by National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician.
Paramedic Work Environment:
Since paramedics provide emergency care and transport the patient to medical facility, they are highly trained medical personnel. They provide extensive pre-hospital care and work under a very hectic schedule 24*7 working both indoors and outdoors, in all seasons. Mostly they work for more than 40 hours on an average in a week at irregular working hours. Paramedics are more prone to contracting illness and experiencing injuries on job than working in other occupations. They are subjected to the risk of noise-induced hearing loss from sirens and back injuries from lifting patients. They not only work in a physically stressful environment but also the sufferings of the patients can be mentally stressful too. Nonetheless, many people find the job challenging and exciting and also enjoy the opportunity of helping others.
