Paramedic Job Description

If you are looking into a career as an emergency medical technician, you need to know what a paramedic job description entails. For purposes of this article, the term emergency medical technician will be referred to simply as paramedic. Now, with that out of the way let’s begin. One of the things required of you if you hope to make it as a paramedic will be your ability to deal with highly stressful and traumatic incidents. You will be seeing some of the worst.

You will have to show that you have what it takes to deal with situations that may very well scare the you know what out of the average person. And you will have to be able to react in literally split seconds to help save people’s lives. There is no time for hesitation in the job of a paramedic. You will sometimes have to work odd and long hours, weekends and holidays. So if you are type that cannot deal with that then being a paramedic may not be for you.

Your paramedic job description will call for you to respond to 911 emergency calls where medical aid will be required. You will be assessing the status of the patients you pick up. Paramedics perform what can basically be referred to as pre-hospital care. As the situations dictate, you will administer and dispense medication, whether intravenous or oral in nature. You will treat and apply dressing to wounds while on the way to the hospital.

The paramedic will also make notes of everything pertinent to the patient’s condition so that they can provide it to medical staff upon arrival at the hospital. You really will be coming across all types of medical emergencies in your job as a paramedic, ranging from drowning, fire victims, gunshot victims, women giving birth, stab wounds and a whole host of other medical crises to numerous to mention in the space provided here.

A paramedic job description will require that not only should you be physically up to the job at hand, but emotionally and psychologically as well. In training to become one, you will often be exposed to real life types of scenarios in a classroom and perhaps outdoors as well, so you will probably know ahead of time if you are going to have the fortitude to be a paramedic. When a person has made it through the courses and passed the tests they are considered up to the job. It is best to take your time and really make sure that this type of career what you want to do for the rest of your life.
